My mom is looking at buying a new car, but it will be hard. Wants an AWD cross over with a manual, with a budget of $15k-$20k. I suggested a Mini Countryman, and various Subarus. She shot down Minis because of reliably, and said her current 2012 Impreza is too plasticy. So no Subarus.
I’m stumped.

CX-5? Can those be had in a manual? I think Kia still offers a manual in one of theirs.

Maybe Honda. I heard you could special order the CR-V with a manual. Idk how many are on the used market though.
Although IIRC it was only on FWD ones :(

Various Jeep (Renegade, Patriot, Compass, Wrangler) models are about all I can think of that combine manual with AWD ability. It seems anything other than what you’ve already mentioned, you can get a CUV with either AWD or Manual, but not both (HR-V, CX-5, Juke).

Force her to buy a Subaru. The new ones are not too bad, my wife has put 21,000 on a 2016 Impreza over the last 11 months and (knock on wood) we have had no issues at all yet. The CVT is the only major problem with the new Subaru’s, and if she is going with a manual anyway, that is a non-issue.

why crossover with manual?
Sports car with manual rwd, or crossover with auto and awd.
Chevy aveo or whatever the new incarnation of it... save some money, get a manual and it’s confused as to what it wants to be. no awd tho

AWD and manual?
The entire list of what the EPA considers a SUV (which includes crossovers) with AWD and a manual from the past decade, in decreasing order of MPG for the best model. Non-Mini/Subarus are bolded, but that doesn’t mean that they’re good ideas, and the further you get into the list, the more true SUVs you get.

She should at least give a newer Subbie a chance. I went to my craigslist and seattles to see a bigger market and just searched for AWD, manual, and he budget back to 2012 pretty much all that came up were subarus, jeeps(fiat), the countryman, and one Mitsubishi.

Used Subie? It’s an unrealistic set of requirements if buying new because you’re going to get better reliability out of a used Subaru than a new Fiat masquerading as a Jeep. Seems like used is what they’re looking for at least.

I’m surprised CR has so little data on them, but for the couple years it has ratings for the Patriot, the problem spots are suspension, trim/paint, and power equipment.
so the Compass/Patriot quality issues are more “I’m starting to get annoyed at this car” then they are “strand you and call a tow truck” problems.
it’s a shame, though, those kinds of problems were part and parcel of Daimler-era Chrysler vehicles, and FCA doesn’t seem to have done anything to address them.

As someone else said, a Subaru is basically what she wants. Crosstrek with a manual will do nicely. And understood that 2012 dash is pretty crappy - we have a 2014. But I believe 2015 onwards they refreshed it and it looks and feels quite a bit nicer. For that price range and requirements there really isn’t much else - unless she wants something older and more expensive to maintain (like a BMW X1 or X3 perhaps).

I don’t really trust CR anymore. It seems like alot of known issues get ignored, and people not liking the navigation system get extra weight. Seems like everyone buying one on here ends up with them in the shop pretty quickly.

not with a manual.
That’s why in 2010 I bought a new AWD manual SX4
then when I crashed it in 2015 the insurance gave me the price of a 2015 Subaru impreza since it was the closest thing to a manual awd sx4.
I took th money and bought a 7 passenger cuv, since 3rd kid was on the way.
